Head Engineer - Permanent Position
Private Island | Exumas, Bahamas
We are looking for an experienced and highly hands-on Head Engineer to join the team on a private island in the Exumas, Bahamas.
This is a varied role suited to someone with a strong marine engineering background who is comfortable taking ownership of the day-to-day engineering and technical operations of a remote island. The successful candidate will need to be practical, systematic and extremely organised, with the ability to lead a team while still being very hands-on themselves.
The island operates much like a small resort, with multiple guest villas and extensive infrastructure, so we are looking for someone who can confidently manage a broad range of engineering systems and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
Responsibilities
The Head Engineer will oversee the engineering and technical operations across the island, including planned and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and the organisation of ongoing engineering projects.
You will work closely with the Island Managers and wider maintenance team to ensure all machinery, systems, equipment and vessels are maintained to a high standard and operating reliably.
The role will require strong experience across:
- Generators
- Water makers
- Air-conditioning and refrigeration systems
- Electrical systems
- Mechanical systems
- Outboard engines
- Heavy machinery
- IT and computer systems
- General island infrastructure and maintenance
Boat handling is also an important part of the role. You must be a confident and capable boat driver, particularly with 25ft centre-console boats as boats are an essential part of day-to-day island operations.
We are looking for someone who is:
- A skilled and experienced engineer with a strong marine/yachting background
- Genuinely hands-on and happy to get involved wherever required
- Systematic and organised in their approach to maintenance and engineering
- Strong with preventative maintenance, record keeping and creating effective systems
- Able to lead and organise a team
- Calm and confident when troubleshooting technical issues
- Comfortable working in a remote island environment
- An experienced and confident boat handler
- Flexible, practical and willing to support the wider operation when required
Previous experience working on yachts, private islands, remote estates or similar environments would be particularly relevant.
Schedule
The position will start in October.
The annual schedule is structured to allow significant periods of leave around the island's operational requirements:
- Second half of January: approximately 2–3 weeks off, depending on the schedule
- Second half of May: approximately 2–3 weeks off, depending on the schedule
- September: full month off
